1.It’s NOT An Energy Drink… It’s A Vitality Tonic With Ingredients That Improve Energy Levels Over Time

We can’t make specific health claims about Homestead Roots, but we can tell you about its ingredients. Maca, one of the key ingredients, is popular with performance athletes and for good reason. Studies have shown that regular Maca consumption enhances endurance and, in one study, improved the time it took cyclists to complete 40km bike rides.

2. It’s Ingredients Contain Antioxidants Which Provide Protection Against Bad Things

Scientists now believe that inflammation plays a major role in almost every chronic, Western disease, including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's and a variety of degenerative conditions.

Antioxidants help protect against oxidative damage which leads to this kind of inflammation. Turmeric, Black Pepper, Green Tea, Ginger, and Licorice, all major ingredients in Homestead Roots, contain potent and well-studied antioxidants, including curcumin, piperine, catechins, gingerol, and glycyrrhizin.

3. It Has Ingredients Which Help With Digestion & The Microbiome

The taste of Ginger gives Homestead Roots a distinctive bite. It also stimulates your stomach to move food on its merry way. In one study, Ginger consumption increased the rate of digestion by 50%.

Jun contains several species of lactic-acid bacteria which are thought to be good for you (probiotic).

Jun/Kombucha made from green tea also appears to have strong antibacterial properties, particularly against infection-causing bacteria and Candida yeasts.

4. It’s A Health Tonic That Tastes Good— Maybe Like Nothing Else You’ve Had

You might not have tasted anything like this before. Homestead Roots gets its unique flavor from the roots that comprise the base brew (Ginger, Turmeric, Sarsaparilla, Dandelion, Licorice, Star Anise, and Maca). It’s a little reminiscent of root beer, with the only sweetness coming from the Jun: an effervescent fermented beverage made from Green Tea and Honey.

Jun is very similar to kombucha, though lighter in flavour, with no sugar (only honey sweetened) and purportedly more packed with probiotics. It’s also got a cult-following and mysterious origin story (Tibet?) that only adds to its allure.

5.It’s Made By People Who Care About Health

We, Gabe & Rebekah, are living the homestead life, growing a garden and sharing its bounty with others through our CSA program and shop. After several hot days working on the land, Gabe envisioned this drink and commissioned Rebekah to make it—a tonic made from medicinal roots, similar to the ones he had found while traveling through Jamaica.

We knew it would take many trials (it did), and that we wouldn’t get it right the first time (we didn’t). However, the Kitchen Magician struck again, creating a living beverage that tastes good in the mouth, feels good in the stomach, and gets positive responses from both the body and mind. We hope you like it!

6. It Has Ingredients That Are Good For Your Brain

Ginger may improve brain function and protect against Alzheimer’s. The Curcumin in Turmeric and Piperine in Black Pepper reduce oxidative damage in the brain and lower the quantity of amyloid plaques on brain neurons (which might otherwise cause cell death and memory loss). Curcumin can actually increase the growth of new neurons and actively fight brain degeneration.

While we can’t claim that there’s enough of the relevant compounds needed to measurably repair your brain, we can say that we drink this stuff regularly ourselves and it sure feels good to us.

7. It Has Ingredients That Are Good For Your Heart

Heart disease is the number 1 cause of death worldwide for both men and women.  Several studies suggest that the Curcumin in Turmeric improves the health of the endothelium (blood vessel lining), whose dysfunction is a well-known driver of heart disease.

Other studies show that green tea improves cholesterol levels and increase the antioxidant capacity of the blood. According to one study, people who regularly drink green tea have up to a 31% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

8. It Has Ingredients That are Antiviral

Star anise has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years and has just recently begun to be accepted in Western practices. Some of the major antiviral compounds found in star anise include Shikhimic Acid and Quercetin. Its shikimic acid content has antiviral capabilities so strong, it’s one of the main active ingredients in Tamiflu, a popular medication for the treatment of influenza.

“Currently, star anise is the primary source of shikimic acid used for pharmaceutical product development. As the influenza pandemic continues to mount as a threat to global health, the demand for star anise is on the rise.”

9. Nutrients and Antioxidants Are Most Potent When They Come From Food

Dr. Lo  advises that you get your nutrients from food as much as possible. Dr. Lo was a lead researcher on one of the largest studies to date on multivitamins which showed that multivitamins were associated with only a small reduction in the rate of cancer, and no reduction in the number of deaths from heart disease. By contrast, Green Tea alone can significantly reduce risk of death from heart disease (See #7, above).

Food is much more potent than supplement pills because it contains, in addition to essential nutrients, many nonessential but beneficial nutrients that aren't in most supplements. Many scientists now believe that antioxidants from foods and beverages are better for your health than antioxidant supplements.

If you made it to #9, you're obviously interested in this beverage!
